Three Rocks

You’ll have heard that nice story about the professor standing in front of a class filling a jar with rocks, pebbles, sand and then coffee? The key takeaway being no matter how full your life is, there’s always time for coffee.

Everyone seems to have heard it, but not so many people have picked up on the other thing that it’s teaching, because the internet focusses on kittens, coffee and epic fails…

There’s a bunch of stuff going on in everyone’s life and jobs. Everything has a different priority. You only have so much time and attention. It’s really easy to fill your time with little things like a quick doom scroll on twitter…

This is a key concept that’s been drilled into me over the years via books and coaching. Identify what the most important things are. Plan them first. Then fill the rest of the space. If the lower priority items can’t fit in around the rocks - that’s ok - because the rocks are the most significant, impacting and important things. Value them and prioritise them.

I work with my teams on that concept - plan your week around 3 rocks - the three most important things. Make sure there is time in your diary to focus on the rocks for the week. Repeat that on a daily basis, make sure the days rocks are prioritised, some of these may be the weeks pebbles. Once the rocks and pebbles of the day are handled first fill the rest of the day with sand.

But still make sure the coffee is on when you get in the office, there is genuinely always room for coffee…
